Press cartooning in Italy

The visual-arts option meets caricature, from Milan to Corriere della Sera

Press cartooning in Italy: Milan

Twelve students of the visual-arts option and of the HGGSP specialism worked on press cartooning with the Tito Livio classical high school in Milan, all the way to the newsroom of Corriere della Sera, visited on 16 April 2024.

The project

The project questions the place of press cartooning in French and Italian cultures: history of caricature from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, workshop of drawn dialogues, exhibition of the students’ work from both countries.

Teachers observed Italian civic education lessons (“Educazione civica”, Law 92/2019): the Valladolid controversy and the representation of otherness, the history of caricature, a history lesson on the Second World War, and interviews on secularism and the Italian concordat.

The visit of Corriere della Sera confirmed how rare press cartoons are on the front page of Italian dailies; the students produced the drawing “Freedom of expression will prevail” in tribute to cartoonists victim of the January 2015 attacks.

The visual-arts option and the HGGSP specialism worked on press cartooning as a critical language: history of caricature, analysis of front pages and production of plates published on the shared padlet.
